JOHN CHAMBERS 75TH BIRTHDAY VIDEO (submitted by Alexander Ruiz prophecysite@hotmail.com http://www.prophecysite.com/chambers.htm

On September 13, 1997, author and director Scott Essman, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the pioneering mukeups from Planet of the Apes, involved dozens of prominent special makeup effects artists to gather at the Motion Picture Country House in Woodland Hills, California, to pay tribute to John Chambers on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

Over 3 dozen of John's proteges, colleagues, and special guests from his 30-year makeup career came to honor him and express their sincere gratitude for his profound influence on their industry.

With bonus appearances by Martin Landau and Roddy McDowall, the magical event was unforgettable for everyone present, but not before a final surprise: The one and only Apemania      Chambers video is great, Both Scott and Brian did a great job with this  Tribute. It was a very cool thing to do. And very cool to watch

REPLACEMENT HEADS FOR 12" FIGURES (submitted 1/17/01 by Chris Hight Chris.Hight@tvguide.com)

My Ape project is 99% ready to go. My partner Mark Gonzalez and I are just touching up the below picture so it looks a little more presentable.   This is the project: I have created replacement heads for those horrible 12" Planet of the Apes figures. Click on the picture below.

These heads are made of resin and have been expertly sculpted by Jim Phillips (sculptor of such garage kits as the Escape-o-nauts and Long Live the King). I am selling these heads for $20 a piece and they come unpainted.

I originally commissioned these heads for my own collection and I am not selling them to make a profit. Any money generated from a sale is being poured into the next head.   Feel free to email me back with any comments or suggestions.

Interview with Chris Hight: 1/18/01

"how much work / hours does it take to do one  properly?"

You can paint up a head in about 2 nights. The apes I make for my own collection have hair and that takes around a weekend. One thing you have to keep in mind is like all "garage kits" some cleanup is neccesary and these heads sometimes have tiny air bubbles so a product called "Zap-a-gap" is needed, Aves Expoy is also really good.

"how did you start up?"

It was all a progression, like the rest of the world I was completely dissapointed with Hasbro's 12" ape line where each figure was worse than the next. I started by painting Ursus gloves, and then moved onto having the gorilla soldier vest made, but no matter what I did the figure still looked awful because I was using Hasbro's heads. As you have seen Hasbro's Cornelious, Zaius, Ursus, the Soldier Ape, and Taylor looked like complete garbage and then out of the blue the garage kit company "Model Prisoners" released this resin model called "Long Live the King" which is Ceaser from Conquest. This was the best representation of an ape I had ever seen. Next thing I know who is running an ad in a Model Magazine? Jim Phillips and
underneath of his name was "sculptor or the Ceaser kit".

I called Jim and told him I'm only doing this for myself etc. He said after I sculpt one head it doesn't matter if you make 1 or 100 the mold is made Let me tell you sculptors are not for the faint of wallet, so I thought if I can sell a handful of these heads I can make more charactors, figures that Hasbro would never even think to make: Julius, Lucius, child Cornelious, Brent, Prefect Barlow etc.  That is the whole story.

NO MORE CLASSIC POTA ITEMS (submitted 1/17/01 by Ken Taylor kentaylor@wr.com.au )

I have heard ( but cannot confirm) that all previous Planet Of The Apes products will be placed on moratorium as to dry up the market of "classic" merchandise prior to the release of the new film ( when there will be ALL NEW merchandise). IF the TV series is ever released on VHS or DVD in North America, it will be probably after the release of the new movie in anticipation of capitalizing on the renewed interest in "APES" w/ the new movie. As I mentioned, I'm not certain, but am only making an assumption.

SELF-WORTH NOW! - POTA (submitted 12/29/00 by Mike Selby  mike@mikeselby.com )

I thought my new book (Self-Worth Now!) would make a good edition to your POTA NEW PRODUCTS page.

In the last chapter of my new book, I describe one of the most amazing and life-changing occurrences of my life: While I have attached the full chapter, it basically describes how I was able to recreate my fetal life through the end credits of the original Planet of the Apes film. It enabled me to have memories of my biological mother, whom I have never met.  I feel it is an important and unexplored aspect of POTA lore. Most of the reviews of my book always mention the POTA part of it. In fact David Gerrold , who wrote Battle for the Planet of the Apes, was so impressed that he wrote a major review of my book.

Self-Worth Now! has just been bought by iUniverse for reprint rights, and it has also been nominated by the SOHP as one of their favorite books of 2000.  Please contact me should you need more information.

You can throw all your other self-help books away-Self-Worth Now! is the only one you will ever need. Selby has written a fascinating and intimate account of self-hate; where it comes from, and how to get rid of it. Full of courage and humor, this is the only book I ever read that makes you feel GOOD to be a human being. The amazing final chapter is worth the price of the book alone. Do yourself-and the people you care about-a favor; buy this book.

CUSTOM MADE FIGURES (submitted 7/8/00 by Jon Hendy assneck@hotmail.com )

I finally finished up the last of my 12" Apes customs.  Thanks for everyone on the Zira boot/shoe color thang.

I basically was really bummed at the quality of the 12" Hasbro Apes line.  The bodies sucked and the costumes were wrong in some ways (mostly the coloring).  So I put all of my apes on Adam bodies (the ultra-posable 12" Joe body made by Dragon) and fixed them up (added hair, dyed clothes, etc..).  When it came to Ursus, I individually casted armor plates in resin
and constructed his body armor.  Took forever.  And yes, Nova is a Barbie.   The pictures aren't the greatest, but I figured that I'd give you guys and gals a look and then take better pics later.

MEDICOM ULTRA DETAILED FIGURES (submitted 6/14/00 by LordTZer0@aol.com )

Not since the Addar resin kits has there been anything this good, and this is even better.  Not very posable, but I'd trade accuracy for flexibility any time.  The back of the box has the usual Japanese idiosyncrasies.  Milo is called Miro.

I'm guessing Greatest Ape is The Lawgiver, and there's 3 different soldier apes.   Don't ask me who Ceaser Land's Ape is, or how he differs from Ceaser, or indeed Caesar. But there are 19 in all.  The only pictures are of Zira, Lucius and Ursus on the box, but they all look great.  I can't wait to get my Zira Astronaut!   Here's the complete list as it appears on the box . . .

Lucius
General Ursus
Cornelius

General Urko
Taylor

Nova

BENEATH SOUNDTRACK ON CD (submitted 5/11/00 by Lukas Kendall mailto:lukas@filmscoremonthly.com )

 apescd.JPG (62500 bytes)apesLP.JPG (56453 bytes)

My name is Lukas Kendall and my company, FILM SCORE MONTHLY, has just released on CD for the first time the ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK RECORDING of BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES, music by Oscar-winning
composer LEONARD ROSENMAN.

FSM is a magazine about movie soundtracks and we also produce limited edition CDs which we license from the film companies and sell exclusively through the magazine.

Our BENEATH CD is fully licensed by 20th Century Fox and is available by MAIL ORDER only from our website: www.filmscoremonthly.com. It will NOT be in any record stores; it is a limited edition of 3,000 units.

As a special bonus, our CD features the original film score (which has never been available in ANY form) which we have meticulously remixed and remastered from the Fox vaults as well as the music-and- dialogue LP tracks released on Amos Records in 1970.   For fans of Charlton Heston's films, among our other CD soundtrack releases are The Omega Man; and for fans of composer Leonard Rosenman, we also released his score to Fantastic Voyage. See http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds for our complete catalog.

We just got our APES CD back from the plant today and I'm trying to spread the word as much as possible! So I'm writing
as many Apes webmasters as I can -- I hope you're interested in the disc and in spreading the word about it. Please contact me if you have any questions; a cover scan is attached.

Following is the press release we're sending out with more info.
Thanks for reading and I hope you are interested in our CD.

FILM SCORE MONTHLY releases Beneath The Planet Of The Apes

Restored 1970 Sci-Fi Original Soundtrack by Leonard Rosenman

Film Score Monthly rescues from oblivion the second film score from the legendary Planet of the Apes series.

The Film Score Monthly Silver Age Classics series presents another long-lost science fiction score: Leonard Rosenman's stunning Beneath the Planet of the Apes. The 1970 sequel to producer Arthur P. Jacobs' groundbreaking sci-fi allegory Planet of the Apes picks up directly after the first film ends, with astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) exploring the lifeless Forbidden Zone of a planet where apes evolved from men. But Taylor soon disappears in a terrifying illusion, leaving Nova
(Linda Harrison) and another human explorer newly landed on the planet (James Franciscus as Brent) to dodge gorilla patrols in Ape City and eventually stumble on a twisted civilization of underground mutants.

Taking over for Jerry Goldsmith, composer Leonard Rosenman retained the neoprimitive musical underpinnings of the ape world while creating a score very much written in his own, inimitable style. The result bridges the alien soundscape Rosenman created for Fantastic Voyage with the percussive barbarism always associated with the upside-down civilization of the ape
planet. Rosenman's Beneath the Planet of the Apes is as inventive and otherworldly as Goldsmith's original Apes score, yet Rosenman's approach is in its way diametrically opposed to Goldsmith's--composed of vertically-stacked layers of sound, clanging, metallic effects, bristling, rambunctious chase music and a perverse, chaotic march for the ape army. Add to this some striking electronic effects and a bizarre choral mass written for the atomic bomb-worshipping mutants, and you have the recipe
for one of the most original science fiction movie scores ever written.

For years Leonard Rosenman's Beneath the Planet of the Apes score has been available to collectors only in the form of a strange concept album released in conjunction with the movie. For this LP Rosenman was asked to rearrange his score for a smaller orchestra and add contemporary elements including electric guitar performances and rock percussion. Leavening these
stylistic departures from his original score were several dialogue sequences from the film, another common practice from the old days of motion picture soundtrack albums that persists today. For the FSM Silver Age Classics release we have gone back to the original score as heard in the film in dynamic stereo sound, including every note Rosenman recorded for the movie, electronic music and sound effects (some created to sonically illustrate the mind-controlling abilities of the film's mutants)
and the score's hair-raising Mass for the Bomb.

This score has never been available before in its original form, and as a bonus we've included the complete original LP arrangements and dialogue snippets, which provide a striking contrast between the score Rosenman originally wrote and its adaptation as a popular soundtrack album. It's the second musical piece in the Planet of the Apes puzzle, and a fascinating
companion piece to both the original Planet of the Apes score and Leonard Rosenman's science fiction and fantasy work.

FSM's Beneath the Planet of the Apes CD is available exclusively from the magazine and website (www.filmscoremonthly.com) for $19.95 plus shipping:

POTA MOVIES ON DVD - BOX SET   (submitted 3/25/00 by Philip Nobile pjn1209@earthlink.net )

Apes Saga Coming to DVD! Here's a little tidbit from dvdfile.com
Now, on to the goodies. First is probably the biggest Fox request as of late, the PLANET OF THE APES box set. Indeed, this six-disc set is THX-certified and all-anamorphic (yeah, baby), will arrive around 4Q 2000 and features all the films plus an extra "sixth disc" containing the terrific making-of documentary seen on the Fox Channel, amongst other places. However, never fear, the sixth disc will be included in the box set and you won't have to mail away for it! There may be some other
goodies on the discs, but in any event it looks pretty dang cool.
Click here to read the full story

some of the extra features to be included on the single
DVD release of POTA in the U.S.:
Trailers for all 5 movies,
Picture gallery ( don't know how many)
Repro of the official 30th Anniversary web site
I think it's being released in July, with the box set being released in Sept.

NEW 6" figures from MEDICOM submitted by MC 2/3/00 kpmichan@netvigator.com

POTA Medicom release, there are only 2 types - soldier and Cornelius. In fact, they are only 6" figures carded in blister with super details. They are more like the Hasbro release - 'Special Collector Edition' but
10 times better in sculpting and coloring. And their price is also very expensive - US$25 per figure and each one has another limited edition which is even more expensive. And next release will be Zira, Ursus and Lucius.

latest Japanese Medicom apes pic which I just bought. They are Cornelius and Soldier apes. each of them comes in a special version - Cornelius has a darker outfit and the soldier has a different rifle.

JAPANESE POTA FIGURES AVAILABLE IN US (submitted by Jeff Krueger  2/10/00 )

Japanese "Ape" figures "Cornelius" and a "Soldier Ape" are available. With a discount, I got the Soldier for $25.  I think they are the only ones available right now, since they are the only ones pictured on the card back. But the card promises 19 of them, but not as great a selection as one might think (no mutants!). The lineup is slated to include: Taylor, Cornelius, and Zira (those three available as astronauts or in their more familiar guise), Milo (as astronaut), Lucius, Gen. Ursus, Gen. Aldo, Gen. Urko, Dr. Zauis, Nova, Caesar and, whatever the hell they are, "Caesar Land's Ape" and "Greatest Ape". Of course, that only makes 16. The last 3 apparently are variant Soldier Apes. There's the one I have with a brown gun, there's one pictured with a lighter gun and the card has another "Soldier Ape" designation. They aren't appreciatively superior to Hasbro's 7" line, just better proportioned and smaller (which I like). They are officially licensed, with the Fox logo. Look for them from Japanese toy importers. Meanwhile, what's Hasbro up to? All should be revealed next week at Toy Fair 2000 (Feb. 13 - 17), where toy toy companies annually unveil their lines for the year. If there's going to be more "Ape" toys, we'll post 'em here. Also upcoming is the annual ShoWest convention for movie theatre owners (March 6 - 9 in Las Vegas).

APEMANIA ECONOMY POTA MASKS - (submitted 11/29/99 by Brian Dumont afryt4u@earthlink.net )

For just about a year now, since the infestation of  the Kenner/Hasbro line of Planet of the Apes commemorative dolls, we've all been talking back and forth on how the coolest thing (other than the fact that there is new ape product for sale) is the packaging for the new dolls.  Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that there is enough interest in Planet of the Apes to warrant new merchandise, but personally, by today's toy standards, Kenner could have done a much better job with the likenesses and quality of the dolls.

I've read a great deal of comments here on the POTA web group, most of which reflect people's disappointment in the product, even though they are still happy that something NEW is out there.

Because of all the disappointment with Kenner's dolls, we thought we would turn to you the fans FIRST to prevent a similar situation from occurring.

In December we will be debuting our licensed ECONOMY line of Planet of the Apes masks, priced in the $79 (USA) range, but before we get too TOO deep into production, we thought it might be a good idea to contact the real hard-core Planet of the Apes fans (you folks) and get your opinions and suggestions BEFORE we make the product available to the masses.

Imagine that, the consumers actually get to give input and the manufacturer is welcoming it with open ears!  (Are you listening Kenner/Hasbro?  Watch and learn if you are...)

We have posted a couple of fotos of our first ECONOMY prototype on our site, however this design was just a test to see if we could get a convincing look with an inexpensive synthetic hair fabric and to determine how much the latex would shrink over time and if we needed to resculpt and compensate for that shrinkage.  We have gone back and resculpted this item and for aesthetics reduced the size of the chin, and we now are "ape-lying" the same specs to the rest of the characters we will be releasing.   You can all view the first ECONOMY prototype by going to this special link:  http://apemania.com/ECONOMY.htm

NEW JAPANESE POTA FIGURES (submitted 10/21/99 by Ken Taylor kentaylor@wr.com.au )

Rumour has it that Japanese Toy company Medicom are planning a release of APE figures. If this eventuates, they'd really be something to look forward to as their attention to detail is awesome on their other lines. Cornelius and two different Gorillas are possible first releases.  The bad news?  This 12 inch fig may retail for $90.   Details are sketchy at the moment. Have only heard of three figures so far. Also don't know how posable they will be as Medicom have two different body types, a G.I Joe style that is fully posable and a basic style that wouldn't be any more posable than the Hasbro 7' line. Either way, they're a guaranteed to be superior to the Hasbro figures......hopefully.

NEW FIGURES (submitted 10/21/99 by renaissance29@juno.com )

I read recently on the Internet that Hasbro may be working on making several new 7" figures, including Nova (YES!) and General Ursus.   And, they were also rumored to be working on a 12"   "Zira in space suit", "Cornelius in space suit", and "Human Mutant" (presumably from BTPOTA).  Please keep in mind that this is a huge RUMOR, and, if true, these figures would only be released if the current 7" and 12" figures were popular.    I haven't seen many of the new 12" and 7" figures around, but that could be just because of poor distribution.

POTA MOVIE SCRIPTS FOR SALE (FOR CHARITY) (submitted by Lynn Swartz swartz@usc.edu 9/26/99)

20th Century Fox is auctioning a copy of the script for all the Planet of the Apes films (four scripts) in a charity auction on Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170670701

The Planet of the Apes scripts are described in some detail at the Ebay site.  As for its legitimacy, all the scripts are made by the Story Files Department on the 20th Century Fox studio lot and will carry with them a letter authenticating that they are what the description on Ebay says they are (that letter will be from the head of Story Files -- the Story Dep't is responsible for all the studio's old and new scripts...tracking them through development and into production) . Fox is donating the script for the purpose of the charity auction, as a community service project (both USC and 20th Century Fox are in Los Angeles and a number of the top Fox execs were graduates of USC's film school.) All proceeds for the sale of the script will go to USC (and money orders or checks would be made payable to USC as well - Fox is also paying shipping).

RETURN TO THE POTA CARTOON SERIES ORIGINAL ART FOR SALE (submitted 9/26/99 by Micheal Pahlow  mzaiusp@earthlink.net

I picked up this original drawing of Dr. Zaius From the Return to the Planet of the Apes this weekend. I also got a drawing of a Sea Monster from the same series. I thought you might like to see it. The gallery that has the art is Van Eaton Galleries in Sherman Oaks, CA they have more in case you are interested for yourself. The art is very hard to find I'm told by collectors. Their phone is 1-818-788-2357. They also have art of Zira, Urko, Humans, Ape Senators, etc.

The prices vary anywhere from $25 for drawings of minor characters to up to $550 for Major characters cels on a full color backgrounds. Most of the pricing was in the $100 to $250 range. My Dr. Zaius drawing was $250 and the sea monster was $25.    They had about 20 pieces of art in stock.

12' HASBRO GORILLA (submitted 9/26/99 by Ken Taylor kentaylor@wr.com.au )

The 12 inch Gorilla Hasbro are selling on line is different to the one that is in stores. The on-line version is a Gorilla Soldier w/ backpack and gun The regular release is a Gorilla Sergeant w/ capture net. His jacket features the ranking insignia as seen in the TV series. I don't know if the there are any other differences as I haven't got the Sergeant as yet. The Soldier's head is a different mold to that of the previously released "Ursus" but the colors of his uniform are all wrong. A shame when they put
so much attention to detail into the 12 inch Star Wars figures. Apparently the smaller figures have hit the shelves in Walmart and Target (on the west coast at least).

CUSTOM HASBRO CORNELIUS (submitted 9/26/99 by PHILIP NOBILE pjn1209@earthlink.net )

Here's a before and after of a Hasbro Cornelius figure that I altered.   The sculpt looks totally different, and all I did was change the hair and repaint the face.  Also put him on a thinner, more poseable body, darkened the leather, and gave him green boots to replace the brown. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Museum/9953/comparecornelius.jpg

ROLAND MANN (POTA AUTHOR) SILVERLINE PROJECT (submitted 8/26/99 by Roland Mann rmann@kakuta.com

SCARY BOOK brings chuckles for Halloween
Silverline announced today that THE SCARY BOOK, the graphic novel shipping in October, will have an introduction by famed Horror Novelist C. Dean Andersson. The book will ship in early October and will be a perfect choice for the Halloween season. It is available through both FM International and Diamond Distribution, be sure you've ordered your copy.

"We met Mr. Andersson several years back at one of those famous Texas conventions," said Roland Mann, Silverline editor. "We got to talking about comics and American Indians and history and just had a really great time. He knows Sidney and knows his work, so it was without hesitation that we contacted him for the intro."

THE SCARY BOOK is written by horror novelist Sidney Williams, author of such works as AZARIUS, NIGHT BROTHERS and BLOOD HUNTER, and such comic works as MANTUS FILES, SIRENS and THE MARAUDER. "I had just agreed with a fellow writer that comedy and terror don't mix when I got a call from Roland. When he asked if I could come up with a comedy horror, I said sure," said Williams. The art is done by Steve Willhite and Dan Schaefer.

The Scary Book is a wild and zany blend of horror, humor and pop culture. It is about a "book of evil incantations that gets lost on earth, and the Devil has to get it back before Hell freezes over." Bookstore clerk, Marty Applegate is the one recruited to get it back. His associates are a demonic beauty named Crimson and a senile private eye who calls himself Phillip Chandler. When all of the Devil's minions are released from the bottomless pit, the bad place, you know . HELL ITSELF!

NEW POTA FIGURES UPDATES (submitted 2/24/99 bysteven.temple@wcom.com and Philip Nobile at pjn1209@earthlink.net)

I highly recommend anyone interested in POTA figs. to check out the site Philip mentioned last month.  The custom Taylor figure was really cool...which by the way, has anyone seen the newest 12 inch Signature Series in the stores yet?
It's the new ones including Zira, Gorilla Slave and Taylor in his flight suit.    I noticed the new 12" line now comes with display stands...about time.     I wasn't too impressed with Zira, but I agree with Reece...bring on Nova!    The new small figures come out summer 1999    Check out this link: http://members.aol.com/palfile/page/index.htm and go to Tomart.com to see the smaller 6" figures.    The 6" figures are: Taylor, Cornelius, Zaius, Gorilla Soldier, and what appears to be the sergeant from the TV series (gorilla soldier with silver stripes on his vest). This same TV soldier has replaced the Conquest Slave Ape in the 12" line.

MISC NEW ITEMS: TRADING CARD SET (submitted 2/2/99)

Alan Maxwell, CEE dept., Heriot-Watt University ceeam3@cee.hw.ac.uk and Ken Taylor kentaylor@wr.com.au

Some time ago, Starburst magazine featured a review of the CD. Also, there was a Starburst special, published a wee while back, which apparently contained an article on James Cameron's proposed new Apes film, but I haven't seen the magazine in question.

Big news is that there is a brand new set of trading cards coming out from Inkworks.. They're featured in the current issue of
Previews magazine. Online, you can read the details at: http://www.diamondcomics.com/previews/products/cards/Planetapes.htm

However, it's probably better picking up a copy of the actual Previews magazine from your local comics shop, since
it also contains details of the binder for the series and also a full page colour advert for the series (which will
apparently be followed by more PotA cards).

Also, a new series of CDs has been released which are compilations of various Sci-Fi theme tunes. One of the CDs
contains a PotA track, but I don't know if it's the main theme from the film or from the TV series. I'm hoping it's the TV theme, although it probably isn't. I haven't been able to confirm it yet. Being a fan of sci-fi and of film & TV music, I'll probably pick up each CD anyway. There are details of the discs at:  http://www.tvtrecords.com/labels/tvt/scifi/

Hasbro may be releasing a series of 5 seven inch figures ( if interest is strong from retailers at Toy fair).

NEW POTA MOVIE WEAPON REPLICAS (submitted 12/15/98 by Joe Castello)

I have created ( from scratch ) the three most popular weapons that were used in the POTA movies including Ape Pistol, Infantry Rifle and the Sgt.'s Machinegun.. These are some of the most accurate, and beautiful pieces that U will ever see, and they are affordable.

I use real wood, resin, metal, and plastic to create these gems.  I have just started mass production, and they are the finest weapons yet, next to the originals. My site is under construction,

U really have to see these weapons to believe them! It is if you were a prop master on the actual filiming! I used Originals when I could get them,( To micrometer, measure, diagram and photo them ONLY! ) and I have studied the five films to the point of obsession.

I have decided on some limited pre-release prices:
Ape pistol: $85.00 / Infantry rifle: $225.00 / Sgt's machinegun: $325.00

We have approx., five of the rifles, and machineguns, and a case of the pistols.  The first five machineguns sold, have metal barrels, and authentic W.W.II .45 Cal ammo clips, and resin bodies, with THE most realistc wood grain you've ever seen on resin.     Joey C CEO/Simian Arms

POTA1998Figures.jpg (22935 bytes)

Hasbro/Kenner second series of figures in its Signature Series line is 3 apes from the original POTA movie (1968) featuring one chimp, one organutan and one gorilla.   These are the first new ape figures put on the market since 1975.   The three new figures are 12 inches tall and come with cloth costumes and rooted hair.   The figures in photo above are: Dr. Zaius, General Ursus and Cornelius.  These figures are the only ones in the planning from Hasbro/Kenner.   Update: It is said that a second set will surely come if these sell well.     The 3 figures are now out and come in limited edition boxes.   There is no Canadian edition of the boxes.

NEW CD RELEASE OF THE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

cdcover.gif (26623 bytes)
Review by Alan Maxwell (Ape Chronicles Member)

Contact Alan Maxwell at: 28 Cedar Grove, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, KY11 5BH

The first thing to strike me about this new CD is the packaging. While Intrada's release used quite common artwork from one of the movie posters, this new release from Varese Sarabande uses less well known artwork. The only other place I have seen this art is on a French POTA movie poster. The inside packaging is also an improvement on Intrada's. The notes are extremely informative, and decorated in glossy color with plenty of rare artwork and stills.

Something else noticeable about this release before the CD has even started playing is one thing that was totally absent from Intrada's version - a logical structure. This is the complete (and I mean COMPLETE) soundtrack, and is presented in exact chronological order. In fact, so complete and chronologically ordered is the CD, that we are even treated to the 20th Century Fox fanfare at the start.

And so to the music.  While the Fox fanfare is not strictly part of the soundtrack, it is a welcome touch and, as stated above, shows exactly how complete this release is.     The sound quality is certainly improved from Intrada's release. While some unavoidable elements remain (analogue tape hiss, etc) this CD has obviously been remastered with far more attention to detail than previous releases. All the instrumentation is clearer and the drums and percussion particularly benefit from being far more pronounced. One particular example would be when I was listening to the new CD and about halfway through "The Hunt", I noticed a percussion noise that I didn't remember hearing before. Sure enough, when I went back and listened to it on Intrada's release I virtually had to hold the speaker to my ear to hear it. The improved sound quality is apparent not just in this instance, but all throughout the album.

Skipping past the familiar man title, the first track of interest is "Crash Landing". This is one of the biggest discoveries on the album, an incredible six minutes and forty seconds of unreleased music. It is taken from the scene when the astronauts crash the ship and have to escape to the shore. This track is then followed by "The Searchers", another two and a half minutes of previously unreleased music, this time taken from the three astronauts' trek through the forbidden zone. This leads into "The Search Continues", which was on Intrada's disc under the title "The Search".    More unreleased music follows, in the form of an updated version of "The Clothes Snatchers" (no prizes for guessing which scene this accompanies). While on the Intrada release, this track was just over two and a half minutes - on Varese's release it measures over three minutes. This track is followed by "The Hunt" and "A New Mate". While neither of these tracks contain any unreleased music, they still benefit from the improved sound quality of the new release.

An extended version of "The Revelation" follows, increased from approximately one and a half minutes to three minutes and twenty seconds. Roughly a minute into this track the previously unheard music is heard, before lapsing back into the theme which ended the track on Intrada's release. This is followed by Taylor's failed escape bid in "No Escape".

Over a minute and a half of unreleased music pops up again, this time in "The Trial". If you need me to tell you which scene this is taken from, then you've not been paying much attention to the film!     "New Identity" is the same, but is followed by a complete version of "A Bid For Freedom", which then leads into the familiar music of "The Forbidden Zone".    More music from the cave excavation scene is released in the form of "The Intruders", which lasts just over a minute, before giving us "The Cave".

The final piece of music from the original film is "The Revelation (Part 2)". This track is also previously unreleased and contains over three minutes of music from when Taylor and Nova wander off into the Forbidden Zone, and then falls silent when Taylor makes the awful discovery.

But the disc doesn't stop there. Also included is a sixteen and a half minute suit from Jerry Goldsmith's other POTA score, "Escape From The POTA". It starts with the camp 70's grooviness of the main title - turn up the volume and boogie! (Or maybe that's just me). As the film gets gradually darker, so does the music, and Goldsmith falls back into the kind of startling music that we know so well from the first film, eventually ending with the short but melancholic notes that accompany the end titles.

The disc improves on Intrada's version in every way. And with over 35 minutes of previously unreleased music, not only is it an excellent tribute to one of the finest film music composers ever, it is an essential purchase for every POTA fan. Final verdict? You MUST buy this CD.

"PLANET OF THE APES AS AMERICAN MYTH" by Eric Greene

How do political conflicts shape popular culture?  This book explores that question by analyzing how the POTA films functioned both as entertaining adventures and as apocalyptic political commentary.  Informative and thought provooking, the book demonstrates how this enormously popular series of secular myths used images of racial and ecological crisis to respond to events like the Cold War, the race riots of the 1960s, the Civil Rights movement, the Black Power movement, and the Vietnam War.

The work utilizes interviews with key filmmakers and close readings of the five Apes films and two Apes television shows to trace the development of the series' theme of racial conflict in the context of the shifting ideologies of race during the sixties and seventies.  The book also observes that today, amid growing concerns over race relations, the resurgent popularity of Apes and Twentieth Century-Fox's upcoming film may again make POTA a pop culture phenomenon that asks who we are and were are we going.

Eric Greene, a writer from Beverly Hills, California, began work on this book while on a Ford Foundation fellowship at Wesleyan University.

This book has a full cover cover of a General gorilla ape.  The interior is black and white with 40 photos.  The book is a great general overview ofthe entire series from movies, tv shows, fanzines and books.

There is a chapter on the making of the first movie and the story's beginnings.   Then there is bio's on Franklin J. Schaffner, Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, Roddy McDowall and others.

The book is a great fan overview of everything to do with POTA.  It's a big 176 pages, softcover.  The only thing to note is that it is NOT in english.    Though reading through it I can figure out what he is usually talking about because the language is very similar to ours.
