WANTING TO PUBLISH ORIGINAL POTA STORY (submitted 12/30/00 by Wendy Kostora wendyk@attglobal.net Nimh, Seattle, Washington )
Just this past year my interest in POTA was revived from the ashes of my
being a devoted POTA fan years ago. I was thirteen when I first saw the movie and
I've been ape about it since then, my interest expanding into science fiction and fantasy.
As an aspiring writer for children's books I just recently started writing about the apes
and has had a poem published by Alex Ruiz, Prophecysite. I also have written a story
entiltled MYTH, which is about 25,000 words. I've been reading the story to my
writer's group. Suprisingly they've given MYTH good reviews, suggesting I put the
story in a world of my own so I can have MYTH published professionaly But I prefer to
remain POTA because most of the story is intervwoven into the events that occured in
Conquest and Escape. To do that brings me to ask you a question Alex said you might
be able to answer. That is; what's up with the copyright?
I know it involves a lot of money as I've been warned. Other than that I'm groping
in the dark.
I have my doubts that MYTH can be publish professionly. As reality speaks, I would have to
be famous,or a well established, science fiction writer to even be considered. But that
won't stop me from writing POTA stories. For me, writing about the apes is like wearing an
old, comfortable, pair of shoes your mom keeps throwing away. Like David Gerrold
told me a long time ago, write what you know and just do it.

POTA LICENSING FROM 20TH (submitted 9/16/99 REPLY BY BRIAN DUMONT afryt4u@earthlink.net )
You probably would want to connect with someone in FOX's publicity or public relations department first.
Because your club is fee based you may end up having to make a deal with Licensing Department so they can get their 10 or 12%, unless you change your Membership Fees to a non-profit sounding "donation" format, then there might not be a Licensing percentage.
I suggest putting together a nice looking proposal regarding your request for an official endorsement from FOX. When it's ready, let me know and I'll find out who you need to connect with over there. You may also want to contact Andrew Parmet at SPLEENWORLD to see how he got his endorsement (I think he has one).
As far as APEMANIA's OFFICIAL FOX ENDORSEMENT, everything has been verbal with that so far. Every "director of this dept" or "vip of that dept" who has encouraged us and given their stamp of ape-rooval to us, has done it verbally. There is some sort of official OFFICIAL term that they use to endorse specialty bits like APEMANIA, but for the life of me it takes forever to track down the right people that handle those types of things for FOX.
Terry Hoknes wrote: Hi Brian, I'm wondering if you have any suggestions on how to get the "seal of approval" or such from 20th Century Fox. I'd like to take the fan club to the next level but not quite sure what to do.

CONTINUITY ? (submitted 10/21/99 by renaissance29@juno.com )
In the film "Beneath", was there any indication that Zira,
Cornelius, and Milo were repairing the spaceship and were going to use it to escape at the
end of the film (something that happened off-screen)? I think the novelization
mentioned this, but was wondering if there was any mention of this in the actual film
itself...
* In "Escape", the three apes (Zira, Cornelius, and Milo) were all wearing full
head and body space suits when they landed on Earth - I'm assuming they got these extra
space suits from the spaceship itself, since I don't remember Taylor, Dodge, and Landon
wearing anything like this when they actually landed on the POTA. Just
wondering....

I am in search of an image of Cornellius that has been morphed onto the
classic profile image of Che Guevara
RESPONSE: sam@projekt.com. 10/13/99
It's not a profile. It's a straight on image of Che
with Cornelius' face . . . I read a brief about that in Spin. The artist's
name is Ruslan Karablin. He has a line of clothing called SSUR --- but i have not been
able to find it anywhere! The shirt in question is called "Che Ape."
It's really pretty damn cool!

PETITION TO 20TH CENTURY FOX
(submitted 9/26/99) by Ron Reicen ron38@webtv.net
Have you thought of starting an e-mail petition on the POTA Int.website
for Fox to release J. Lee Thompson's original cut of "Conquest"? Or some of the
juicy outtakes that pop-up, from time to time, on crappy bootlegs?
With the inevitable release of the movies on DVD, it might
be the right time to start a petition, especially since Fox was so willing to allow
Inkworks such extensive archive access (it's not like these are radioactive archives). I'd
love to sign second (you being first, of course!). What do you think?

MISSING BATTLE SCENES submitted by Chris BlakerG@aol.com 9/26/99
Does anybody know if the new widescreen 30th anniversary edition of Battle of the Planet of the Apes contains the scenes where: where Kolp explains to Alma how and when to launch the Alpha Omega bomb and; the scene where Alma arms the bomb but Mendez talks her out of it.
RESPONSE BY: Ken Taylor kentaylor@wr.com.au 9/26/99
These scenes are only available on the Japanese laser disc box set
released about two years ago.
Also included is the scene of Aldo climbing on to the roof of the school bus in triumph w/
the other gorillas chanting his name. Fox did not include this version of
"Battle" as part of the 30th Anniversary video release. Laser disc set is
in English w/ japanese subtitles. The movies are presented in widescreen so the subtitles
do not obstruct the movie
RESPONSE BY: lawford42@juno.com 9/26/99
The missing footage was officially used at one point. When the movie was
first aired on CBS in 1975/76, it contained the extra footage. And there was more cut out
than just the subplot about the Alpha-Omega bomb. There were additional scenes of Caesar,
Virgil, and MacDonald in the dead city, more scenes of the actual battle- especially where
Aldo and the gorillas
attack the bus. Other scenes were trimmed as well, such as where Caesar, Virgil, MacDonald
are talking to the teacher and Aldo about using the word 'no' in the classroom; more
establishing shots of the mutants (you remember the article in the old POTA magazine where
the guy wrote about being an extra in the movie- it was just a shot of him rummaging
through a pile of junk- but then it was cut out? That's in there as well). Anyway, this
was the version that was released for television and it was
shown as late as 1988- a local station here had a POTA week and I recorded Battle in the
hopes that the extra scenes would be included- and they were! Unfortunately, it was before
I realized the benefit of recording in SP as opposed to EP, so it's not a very good copy.
But for some reason, the home video versions of BATTLE (released in 1985, 1990, and 1998)
all contain the theatrical cut, and all of a sudden in the 90's any version on television
is the edited one. I even tried contacting a
person I know that works at the local station (which has since gone to all news) and he
told me that all the tapes from their movie library had been reused.
There are quite a few missing scenes on the home video release of BATTLE
(which was the same cut shown in the theaters). In
addition the entire subplot about the Alpha-Omega bomb being cut out, quite a few of the
scenes were trimmed (Caesar stalking Aldo in the trees, the gorillas attacking the school
bus full of mutant soldiers as it leaves the city, the teacher explaining to
Caesar/MacDonald why he said "No Aldo No!", some scenes of
Caesar/Virgil/MacDonald in the city, and a few others). As far as I know, none of the U.S.
video versions of Battle (1985/90/98) feature the missing footage. I don't know about the
LD version (which just came out- only the first four movies were released on LD in 1991 in
the U.S.) or the new DVD version. I've heard that the Japanese LD features the missing
scenes, but I've yet to track down a copy. I have a complete version that I taped off of
TV about 11 years ago, but it's only a so-so copy (it was before I realized that using the
slower speeds reduced picture quality). I've sent an e-mail to the guy who
posted on the site about the store (Dave's Video, phone # 818-785-8437) that's selling the
new LDs. I'll let you know if I hear anything. I also have an e-mail from one of the
people at Fox so I'll see if there are any plans for a special edition of BATTLE. You
know, to this day I miss the 4:30 movie. I don't suppose you
have any copies of either of the intro segments (I especially liked the one with the
camerman, but they both were kind of cool). A few years ago I was working at a retail
store and I heard the song that they used for the newer theme music (the one they ran
until it was taken off the air). I have the name of the song and the artist written down
somewhere.

MISSING SCENES submitted by Philip Logie phillogie@phillogie.screaming.net 9/26/99
my brother and i are apes fans and have been since we saw the original movie when it was re-released in the uk in 1974 we are convinced that there was a scene that has somehow been lost from that screening. the scene occurs just after zira and her nephew lucius rescue taylor and nova from the prison sector for humans............ the waggon that they are travelling in is stopped by a gorilla patrol who ask what they are carrying. zira replies that they are transporting humans carrying communicable deseases and that the plague they are carrying is highly infectious. from this news they allow them to pass stating that the only good human is a dead human! please enlighten as we would like to know why this scene has been ommitted from any of the video releases
RESPONSE BY PHILIP MOBILE: pjn1209@earthlink.net 9/26/99
I don't know if it was ever in any cut of the film, but the scene was
shot (it's in the script, and there is a still from this scene floating around).

WHY DO THE APES SPEAK ENGLISH?? Sam Rosenthal blacktape@projekt.com submitted 5/17/99
Does anyone have any theories on this question? I was always wondering as a kid why Taylor was able to talk to the apes. It seems like Taylor would have suspected that he was on Earth right away when he heard the apes speak a language that he could understand (or make sense of anyway). Was it English? A variation of English? We know that Caesar and his comrades spoke it, so was it handed down as the official language of the Lawgiver? And what about Zira being able to read his first note? I know it's easier to just ignore that aspect of the movie, but it is something to consider. If the apes could read English handwriting, what's up with all of the hieroglyphics? It seems like Dr. Zaius would have something to say about borrowing the language and writing of man...Any ideas out there?
I was born in Santa Monica, but I can't recall meeting any sentient apes. that's because most of the sentient apes moved to orange county, where theygot positions in the republican party. - Armando
RESPONSE FROM ERIC PADDON ep993185@oak.cats.ohiou.edu submitted 5/17/99
Charlton Heston said there was a discussion with Richard Zanuck and Franklin Schaffner
during the production about this and Heston insisted that they ignore the point on the
grounds that "English is the lingua franca" of film and it would simply be
easier to assume that the audience would be suspending it's disbelief on this point.
I think it was the correct choice because making a deal of it would have tipped the
audience too much in advance and ruined the point of the film. Sometimes, the best
cinematic tricks come as a result of plot points that don't work when you analyze them too
much (Hitchcock's crop dusting scene in North By Northwest, or the horse head in the bed
in the Godfather to name two examples).
RESPONSE FROM CHRIS blakerg@aol.com submitted
5/18/99- I know the apes aren't telepathic. But maybe Taylor figured at the time the
apes used telepathic communication and thats how he understood them. The apes probably
didn't realize they were using a human language they'll probably thought the lawgiver
invented it and accepted that. On the thing with the hiergolyphics maybe the apes have a
seprate language for their religion, like
how Priests used Latin in church but spoken vernacular outside of church.
RESPONSE FROM MFLulder@aol.com submitted 5/18/99
- It's also possible that in the confusion, Taylor didn't have time, or metal state of
mind to think about how the Apes used English - Caesar

WHAT DOES HESTON SAY? Jason Jeter jcord66@aol.com submitted 5/23/99
During the madhouse scene, what does Heston say after the jailer says "shut up you freak." I saw a site that said he was saying "eat your shoe"? But that doesn't sound right. Can you help me with this?
REPLIES: Philip Nobile pjn1209@earthlink.net
I always thought he said "Julius, you-" and is acut off by another blast of
water.
Julius -"Shut up you freak" Taylor - "Julius you"..... (sentence is
not completed because he gets pelted with the water.)
> Julius - "I said shut up" Taylor- "It's a madhouse!!, a
madhouse!!!" I remember that julius was the jailer.
Steven Temple steven.temple@wcom.com
I've heard all sorts of lines ranging from "are you through?" to "chew your
shoe."
I'm not really sure what the accurate line is...maybe only Heston knows for sure. Sounds
like "chew your shoe" to me. Maybe it's old 60's slang. Let me know
if you find anything else out....I'm curious myself.
UfoEscapee@aol.com Frank - yes ....heston shouts...."its a mad house its a madhouse!"

APE FIGURES ?? Stephen Foley, Australia, submitted 5/23/99 foley@dynamite.com.au
They are both 8" tall and after seeing lots of images on Ebay and other sources I assumed them to be Mego figures. However although they have high cut black plastic boots similar to some Mego's their uniforms are unlike any others I have seen. The human has a tan long sleeve shirt with large black press studs made to look like buttons. The shirt buttons to the side. He wears long trousers which are dark blue to navy in colour. His moulded plastic hair is dark grey/brown with sideburns below his ears. The ape wears the same coloured clothes except the colours are reversed. His shirt buttons in the middle and has a flap at the back. Their uniforms are much plainer in design to any others I have seen. Both figures are fully articulated with plastic ball joints. The human actually has 2 right hands! They were made in Hong Kong but I cannot find a manufacturers mark (unless it is on the feet) as I have been unable to ease the boots off. I hope someone can help as it really bugs me that I can't identify them. They sit unidentified amongst my modest collection of old sci fi cards, model kits, toys and other junk.
I see that the movies are being rereleased. Would anybody know if the old Adder model kits are being reissued, as was done with Lost In Space and Space 1999?

My sister says she's seen a TV commercial for Serta mattresses featuring a man and someone playing Dr. Zira. Can anyone verify this, or is it a case of monkeyshines? I was reading today's (March 19th) L.A. Times article about a Frenchman who skated around the world. Twice the article referred to China's "Forbidden Zones." So, what does this make Chairman Mao...the original Lawgiver? To quote Crow T. Robot from Mystery Science Theater 3000: "Do the apes know they're filming in the Forbidden Zone?"
RESPONSE: Philip Nobile pjn1209@earthlink.net 4/26/99
I've seen it - the guy is dreaming, but the viewer doesn't immediately know that. Something about "With Serta you can (something fantastic), or play chess with Cornelius, from Planet of the Apes. I was wondering if anyone remembers (at least anyone who lived in the NYC area in the mid 70's when WABC in NY would have POTA weeks on the 4:30 movie? I would swear that one time when they showed Battle that someone had reinserted cut scenes showing the alpha omega bomb. In one scene before the mutants attack, Kolp shows the bomb to Alma and Mendez, giving them orders to set it off if he doesn't return. Then at the end, after the mutants are killed, one lone mutant returns to Alma and Mendez to let them know that they lost. Mendez then decides, rather than set off the bomb, its better to wait. This changes the whole ending of the film, which, without these scenes, makes it seem like theres hope to change the future, and Caesar's tear at the end becomes all that more poignant. Nobody believes that I've ever seen these scenes. Please someone out there, tell me I'm not crazy.

3652ac24.3ad-@m2.iida.co.jp wrote: I
know many APES fans consider Conquest to be the best of the sequels, but I have one
nagging problem with it; how and why did Chimpanzees get so tall in just twenty years or
so?! In the earlier films it is easy to except that the apes are somewhat evolved
from the apes we know in the present. Just as modern man is well taller than men of the
middle ages. But, in Conquest, suddenly the apes are "man-size". I know I'm
nitpicking, but I just can shake it... Any thoughts from the APE scholars out there?
Reece Hendley says: I always wondered about that myself. Not
just "man-size," but sentient as well. There's only one way of doing it
within several thousand (not million) years of evolution...genetic engineering. I'd love
to see a POTA remake that addresses this issue. The apes discover that they were
genetically-engineered using primarily human DNA. Can they escape their human tendencies
for warfare and self-destruction? Consider the moral dilemmas involved, especially in
light of Dolly the sheep and President Clinton expressing concern over the fate of a
human/cow cell. ("Planet of the Cows"? It lacks something, doesn't it?)
RESPONSE BY: Chris Lawless lawford42@juno.com submitted 9/26/99
Although he didn't come right out and say it, Armando inferred that genetic enginerring
had taken place over the years. In the beginning of the film where Armando is telling
Ceasar about the plague that killed all the cats and dogs, he says (in part) "when
people saw how easy they were to train, how quick they were to learn.... the apes
(eventually) became larger, and larger, until..". At that point, Ceaser interrupted
him and grumbled "It's monstorous".

elggrande@yahoo.com Gardner Goldsmith
I thought it would be worthwhile to contact you and express my
appreciation for your work! Planet of The Apes was the formative fiction series (including
the films, books, Tv series cards, comics, and action figures) when I was a kid. I have a
feeling most of us are around the same age, and were all hit by the same intense interest
to explore the worls of the apes.
Personally, POTA spurred me to become involved in writing. A few years ago, I began
writing to Carol Serling, who was not only gracious enough to reply, she often did so more
quickly than many of my old college pals!
Subsequently, I received funding from a libertarian organization to travel to vancouver
and work with the "Outer Limits" script department in a three month internship.
That then led to a Writers' Gyild internship at "Star Trek: Voyager". And the
one thing I have to tell you is that most, if not all of the writers I met who were around
27 to 33 years old named POTA as the movie that influenced them to become writers. While
Star Wars may have the publicity, POTA has had the influence. Rod Serling, Pierre Boule,
Paul Dehn: thank you all!!!!
I'm currently speaking with a couple agents to see if they are going to repreent me, which
would allow me to pitch stories to producers in the television and film industries, so
cross your fingers, okay?
Now, on to other matters. What's the word on Cameron's film? I'm frustrated a bit by it
because since my teen years I've had an idea that I alswys wanted to write, but I was
intimidated by an industry I didn't understand. After getting some information about the
scriptwriting business, I began outling the story, in preparation of working on the
script, but it appears James Cameron has beaten me to the punch. I'm sure lots of you guys
have had similar ideas, and hoped that someone would resurrect the franchise in the
appropriate manner. Do you think Cameron will do it?
The publication you produce sounds great! I was wondering about subscription info. Could
you send me more details? Also, does anyone you know have any information about the
original series of trading cards made for POTA, the original film? I recall my brother and
sister having some (they were older than me), and I an very eagerto find a seller of them.
Thusfar, I've been able to get an original POTA poster and seven "lobby cards",
but the original trading cards remain elusive!

MARK TALBOT-BUTLER mark@smoke-mirrors.sohonet.co.uk (submitted 12/15/98)
I found your website browsing through the net one night while
editing my latest movie. I'm a professional film editor working on my fourth feature
and have always considered myself (since age 9) to be the biggest POTA fan in the world.
The movies and the TV show, which captured the imagination of a crazy 9 year
old English boy way back in 1974, are really the main reason why I got into the film
business in the first place. I feel that, quite recently, I came full circle as I am
cutting a feature documentary about a famous English Director of Photography - Jack
Cardiff, who has shot everything from "The African Queen" to "Rambo:First
Blood Part II". One of our interviewees is Charlton Heston and he was gracious enough
to sign an original 1968 cinema poster of the first Apes picture for me.
As far as the proposed new movie is concerned, my thoughts on this mirror my thoughts on
"PHANTOM MENACE". High quality in American cinema has always been even
more a product of era, politics and attitude than UK cinema. Postwar UK gave us
Michael Powell and Ealing Films. Then a few cool Michael Caine films in the 60s.
The rest is shit. Forget TRAINSPOTTING and FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL -
they're all made under extreme duress and are grateful for their success. But US cinema
during the 60s and 70s was the best cinema in the world since film emulsion was invented.
To get back... can the mega rich, older, more cynical, multi-billionaire corporate
executive called George Lucas make as good a picture in 1998 as the young,
Coppola-supported, tired, poor, SOMETHING-TO-PROVE, all odds against him, USC Film School
graduate of 1976 called George Lucas? I truly hope so. I really do.
As far as APES is concerned - can James Cameron (and I sorely hope it's the ALIENS
Cameron and not the TITANIC Cameron) compete with Rod Serling, Michael Wilson,
Franklin Schaffner and Chuck Heston? That's a f*****g tall order. I take some
solace in the news that it's taking time to make this picture. I hope that's because
they're working towards quality and that it's not some "chuck it around A-List
Directors and see what happens" scenario. Oliver Stone - please NO! Chris
Columbus - please NO! Michael Bay -
please NO! As far as the lead is concerned - who knows? In a funny kind of
way, Arnold is the closest we have to Chuck Heston now, but he isn't Chuck Heston.
This is true in the same way that Hollywood has lots of good actors now, but is strangely
missing people like Cary Grant, James Stewart and Charlton Heston. Know what I
mean? As an idea, Clooney is the best bet, especially a post Soderbergh/Out of Sight
Clooney, but who the hell is going to direct?
My director's away to N.Y. next month to shoot Scorsese and Kirk Douglas for our
documentary - and is under specific instructions to pick up the widescreen box set of APES

RF1K20A@prodigy.com Mike Merencky (submitted Sep 26 1998) What are the odds of a New Television series being created about Planet of the Apes. When will production start on the New Apes Film. Are the episodes of the Television series available on Video. If a New Planet of the Apes television series was created I would be interested in working on it. I am an aspiring writer who studies film and television and who deals with Sci-Fi, and other periods and genres. Sincerely

gwayne@buffnet.net (submitted Sep 26 1998) I was watching the POTA marathon on AMC over the weekend and I happened to catch the "Making Of..". One thing that struck me in particular were the original storyboards and illustrations they used to pitch the first movie. They portrayed a world more akin to the original book than what the movies ended up being. But all the original actors, and production personal they interviewed raved about this extensive series of some 130 full color illustrations. For many of them it seemed to be a major impetus to become involved with the project. They showed some of them, and they look wonderful. Have they ever been reproduced for in a comprehensive collection or made available to the public ? Thanks...

derekmuk@jps.net (submitted Sep 26 1998) Do you know anything about two unproduced POTA TV series scripts. One was called "the Hostage" and the other was "The Fallen God." I came across an ad in a magazine a while back that had them for sale but didn't order them. Now I regret it. Have any info?

toys_collectibles@vei.net (submitted Aug 12 1998) My name is Todd. I have a piece of newspaper that is called the "Simian Sentinel". The only date on it says January 1 Vol. 1. It has all kinds of articles in it about Roddy and all the others from the movie. It's put together almost as if it were something from the movie. Someone told me it was given away at the movie theatre. Ever heard of it or seen anything like this? I am trying to find a price on it, It's not a booklet it is a single sheet folded. I havent decided whether to keep it or not. It really depends on what its worth. The first 2 are of the front page. When unfolded it's the size of a regular newspaper so it's to big to scan. The last one is partially of the back. The inside has things about the movie and other articles. The scans dont show the browning of the paper. It smells like old comic books so I'm sure it's authentic. It doesnt have any tears in the paper anywhere. I would say the condition was Near Mint-Mint.

gfamily@fair.net David
Garrett (submitted September 13th 1998) I saw the POTA trash cans this weekend. My
father came across them in a Hardware Store in Georgia. Evidently the owner discovered
them while cleaning out a warehouse. It is a set of three 13-inch tall metal trash cans
that are nested (one inside the other). They are oval-shaped and identical except for
size. They had been wrapped while in the warehouse so they are in mint condition. They
have animated scenes and characters (as opposed to photographs) from the first POTA movie
(I think. Was General Aldo in the first one?) on both sides. The copyright date on the
cans says "1967 Apjac Productions Inc. and Twentieth Century-Fox Film
Corporation". On the bottom of each can is imprinted "Cheinco, Made in
USA".
Also, concerning my metal trash cans, (I'm just full of questions aren't I), am I correct
in assuming these three cans are a "set" just because they are nested. They are
definitely three sizes, but just barely. They fit snugly and can only stack one way
Upon reflection, I wonder if this was just the easiest way to ship the cans to the
dealers. If they are separated and set side by side, the size difference is almost
indistinguishable. Any expertise in this area? Thanks for allowing me to
bug you with this.
